Was this lawfully right?

A school I went to previously in Indiana had this student searched for a gun with no real reasonable suspicion. In one of my cles a student was making fun of the "soon to be searched" student. In the conversation of the students mean words he stated that "I bet he will be one of those kids to bring a gun to school one day." The teacher heard THAT and reported it to the office. Which the next day the poor student was searched my cops for a weapon, and he was pretty embarred. This just doesn't seem right to me, the student was searched just because of a conversation a student was having MAKING FUN OF THE STUDENT. I don't see why the teacher didn't punish the student slandering the other one in the conversation. Please reply to this.
